Services - Behavourial Safety, Safety Culture and Human Factors

The HSE define Human Factors as “environmental, organisational and job factors, and individual characteristics which influence behaviour at work in a way which can affect health and safety.”  They state that up to 80% of accidents can be attributed, at least in part, to the actions or omissions of people. Other researchers have quoted even higher figures.

Even when procedures, risk assessments and training have all been put in place people often still behave in unsafe ways – e.g. talking short cuts, not wearing protective equipment, ignoring rules and ignoring warning signs. Behavioural safety initiatives look at the complex issues and safety culture that causes these unsafe behaviours and put measures in place to reduce them.

Our principal consultant has over 10 years experience working with behavioural safety. In 1997 he developed and implemented a behavioural safety initiative on a large chemical manufacturing site. This produced a significant reduction in accidents and was written up as his dissertation for an MSc in occupational health and safety management from Loughborough University.

We offer a comprehensive range of behavioural safety, safety culture and human factors services. The methods used for behavioural safety have strong links with those used for quality and productivity improvement and we can help introduce initiatives that combine all three areas, giving additional benefits for your company.

Please contact us and we will be happy to discuss our services in more detail.
